My Style

I’ll just go ahead and say it: I’m not IN LOVE WITH black and white images.  Gasp!  Did I really just post that?!  Sure did.  I sort of knew it was true but never really had the guts to say it out loud until Chelsea said it for me one day.  We were sitting outside the reception venue while the guests ate dinner, scrambling to go through the best images for the same day slideshow.  I came upon one image that I loved but the lighting was really tricky.  “I guess I could just put it in black and white…” I said, to which Chelsea immediately replied,  “Yeah, but that’s not really you.”  Bam.  Right there.  Truth I had been afraid to own.

There’s just something about the beauty of VIBRANT color that makes me want to sing!  Bold, beautiful, and rich colors make the best photographs, in my humble opinion.  It’s not that I never do black and white; sometimes the situation just calls for it- especially if the lighting in the church is too harsh (read: florescent lights or bright red carpet).  But to me, for my little love-of-color heart, something just fades away when an image is taken into black and white.  A little piece of me just sinks.  For some people, this is not the case at all- they LOVE black and white and to them it feels classy and timeless. Isn’t it odd that us photographers get such strong FEELINGS from our images?!  I swear, we’re all a little crazy but it makes us good at what we do and it’s what makes us unique in this industry!

So if you’re looking for a photographer who is going to produce some amazingly classic black and white portraits, I’m not your girl.  You’re looking for someone like Justin & Mary or Abby Grace who’s work I admire and LOVE but could never replicate simply because it’s not ME.  I shoot for optimum color, always.  And when I edit said colorful images, my heart usually skips a beat, and then I smile SO BIG and remember why I love my job!
